Making Waves

I’ve always been influenced by color and texture from the time I was a boy and fell in love with home made quilts, quite common in the Southern portion of the United States where I grew up. As an adult, as I have traveled the world, I have remained inspired by color and texture. Years ago when I started my own design house, I was drawn to upholstery fabrics for similar reasons, color and texture, and this remains true today with wax prints.

Dutch Wax Prints also known as African wax prints are omnipresent and common materials for clothing in Africa, especially West Africa. They are industrially produced, colorful cotton cloths with batik printing. One feature of these materials is the lack of difference in the color intensity of front and back side. The wax fabric can be sorted into categories of quality due to the processes of manufacturing.

The producer, name of the product and registration number of the design is printed on the selvage, protecting the design and allowing reading the quality of the fabric.

The design of the wax print fabrics already has an influence on the international world of fashion and lifestyle. They are an inspirational source for designers and companies.

CONFERENCE OF PARIS (COP21)

We were asked by the World Health Organization’s Public health, environmental and social determinants of health (PHE) department to create a back drop to go along with a 3d poster that had been created for the COP21 conference (#cop21) in Paris. The goal was to create something that did not distract from the focus, the 3d floor poster created by master artist and architect Kurt Wenner, but I wanted to introduce something interesting and engaging vs a non-engaging piece.

SPAIN-PHOTO

Understanding the brief, we started with a photo that I had taken recently on a trip to Spain, which ironically had windmills, mountains and cityscapes, which seemed to sync well with the Sustainable Innovation Forum (SIF15) initiative. We went through several modifications of the art work as we needed to have one side of the image to represent clean skies, and the other representing a more polluted sky. What appears in the portfolio is a range of options we made available for the client. The final version is below and is 3m x 2m.

AFRICA INSPIRED #kebolivin

Many here have come to know me for my main work over the last 5 + years as the private and luxury sector guy trying to make a name for himself in the world of public heath, and so far so good. But as a reference, the essence of who I am, and will always be is a clothing designer. All that I do as a creative is built on the core foundation of how it all started, with my love for fashion.

THE PEOPLE’S PROCESS

PEOPLES-PROCESS
Good day all,

I just wanted to say I’m back in Geneva after another 3 weeks working in the Philippines. This time around I was there producing a video for UN Habitat and their “People’s Process” shelter program implemented following Typhoon Haiyan in Roxas City. It was an awesome experience working with a super fun bunch of folks from the top down.

The last 2 times I’ve been to the Philippines I’ve had the chance to work on projects outside of immunization and vaccines and it’s been wonderful to see how other UN agencies tackle challenging issues. I continue to hold in high regard those individuals that work globally to try and make such a difference in others lives while making sacrifices in their own, especially those in the field often away from their families for long periods of time.

I just wanted to say I’m back here in Geneva and I hope to see those based here and that travel here soon.

Ciao
