Job Description

Are you excited by the idea of building fast, reliable, and scalable infrastructure for a product used by engineering teams around the world? We’re looking for a Site Reliability Engineer to join the Backstage team at Spotify where we’re building a developer platform that helps organizations improve their developer experience—and we’re moving fast.

As part of our growing engineering team, you’ll help design, build, and operate the cloud infrastructure behind our external developer portal product. You’ll collaborate closely with experienced engineers while gaining hands-on experience with real-world scale, observability, and security challenges in a modern production environment.

This is a great opportunity for someone who thrives in a startup-like setting, enjoys working on infrastructure, and wants to grow their impact by supporting a product used by engineering teams globally.

Backstage is more than just a platform—it’s a ground-breaking force in the developer community. Born out of Spotify’s quest for better developer tooling, Backstage is now a powerhouse driving the future of developer portals across the globe. From industry titans building internal developer platforms to lean teams looking to skyrocket satisfaction, our solutions set the new gold standard.

As part of the Backstage team, you’ll shape the developer experience for companies big and small, for our thriving open-source community, and for Spotify itself. You’ll have the unique opportunity to be at the forefront of developer tooling, driving innovation that touches millions.

What You'll Do
  • Help maintain and improve the reliability, security, and scalability of Backstage’s infrastructure.
  • Participate in our on-call rotation and help ensure our systems meet reliability and availability goals.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to build infrastructure on GCP and AWS, using Terraform and other infrastructure-as-code tools.
  • Partner with security and compliance teams to implement guardrails and best practices.
  • Contribute to operational tooling and automation that helps teams deploy, monitor, and manage their services more effectively.
  • Operate in a modern web stack environment—our product is built with TypeScript and React—so while this isn’t a frontend-heavy role, you’ll need to be comfortable understanding and supporting fullstack systems.
  • Participate in planning and delivery of technical projects alongside product and engineering teammates.

Who You Are
  • You have hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (preferably GCP or AWS) and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform.
  • You understand the principles of distributed systems and how to operate them reliably at scale.
  • You’ve worked with at least one modern programming language (e.g., TypeScript, Java, Go, Python), and you’re comfortable navigating fullstack applications—even if frontend isn’t your main focus.
  • You care about code quality and reliability and look for ways to improve systems through automation and testing.
  • You’re collaborative, open to feedback, and eager to grow as an engineer.
  • Bonus: You’re familiar with open-source projects or have contributed to shared tooling.

Where You'll Be
  • This role is based in New York.
  • We offer you the flexibility to work where you work best! There will be some in person meetings, but still allows for flexibility to work from home.
