Job Description

Job Title: Chief Engineer

The Chief Engineer supervises the maintenance operations and physical condition of the hotel to ensure the highest standards of guest satisfaction within the allotted budget. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Responsibilities

  1. Manage and supervise the Maintenance Department daily, including scheduling, hiring, training, and coaching staff. Oversee engineering operations and expenditures.
  2. Collaborate with the General Manager in preparing annual budgets. Conduct daily inspections of units under maintenance.
  3. Participate in walk-throughs with management to ensure residences, public areas, and back-of-house areas are well maintained, with preventative maintenance processes in place.
  4. Recommend property improvements to the General Manager and provide information to determine the need for outside contractors.
  5. Oversee all capital construction and major maintenance projects, obtain necessary certificates and permits, and set up a renewal monitoring program.
  6. Ensure all duties are performed safely and satisfactorily, maintaining punctuality, good attendance, and reliable transportation.
  7. Supervise, develop, and maintain ongoing maintenance operations, including refrigeration, heating, plumbing, water treatment, and equipment such as air/heating units, pools, lighting, kitchen equipment, emergency generators, and electrical systems.
  8. Regularly inspect and evaluate the physical condition of the entire hotel, including guestrooms, public areas, and the pool area, documenting inspections using current company forms.
  9. Coordinate with other departments (e.g., Front Office, Housekeeping) to address maintenance and repair issues, ensuring high customer satisfaction.
  10. Order materials, complete work assignments on time, and operate within departmental expense plans.
  11. Perform maintenance activities such as painting, plumbing, electrical work, and replacing filters. Notify management of major repairs or equipment upgrades. Tend to HVAC and boiler systems as needed.
  12. Establish or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules and recommend improvements. Resolve work problems and assist staff in problem-solving.
  13. Train staff on safe practices and monitor compliance.
  14. Minimum Requirements: At least three years of leadership or supervisory experience, preferably in a hotel environment.
  15. Strong written and oral communication skills. Proficiency with technology, including PCs, smartphones, and Microsoft Office.
  16. Familiarity with hotel property management systems, procurement, and work order systems, with the ability to learn new software.
  17. Experience in supervising and motivating maintenance staff, including hiring, firing, coaching, counseling, evaluating, and training. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of staff and attend periodic meetings with management.

Employees must meet the following physical requirements to perform essential functions:

  • Regularly stand, walk, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
  • Frequently lift/move up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 100 pounds.
