Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, the undergraduate liberal arts college at The New School, seeks to hire a scholar of art history and visual studies to fill a one-year, 80% proportional fixed-term position as Assistant Professor of Art History and Visual Studies in the Visual Studies Program, beginning July 2025. This appointment carries no presumption of renewal. The ideal candidate will be qualified to teach the Visual Studies Program foundational course LVIS 2001: Introduction to Art History and Visual Studies as well as two upper-level, elective courses for the Visual Studies Program curriculum, including new courses that address histories/genealogies of art; theories/methodologies of artistic forms, techniques, technologies, or media; exhibition & curatorial studies; and/or research-based artistic practice. We seek a candidate with prior experience teaching discussion-based seminar courses in a liberal arts context; and a record of effective scholarly contributions to art history, visual studies or related fields. The Visual Studies program is a part of the Department of the Arts, which also includes Music, Dance, and Theater programs. Eugene Lang College is a liberal arts college within the larger nexus of The New School, which includes The New School for Social Research, Parsons School of Design, the College of Performing Arts, and Parsons Paris. RESPONSIBILITIES Teach LVIS 2001: Introduction to Art History and Visual Studies and an upper-level course in art history and visual studies in fall and spring semesters. The teaching load is four courses for the year, two each semester. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Candidates must have: Doctoral degree (or advanced/terminal degree appropriate to candidate’s field of specialization) in art history, visual studies or related field, completed by the time of appointment. Successful undergraduate teaching experience in art history, visual studies or related field in a liberal arts context; and experience/interest in contributing to curriculum development for art history and visual studies in an interdisciplinary, open-curriculum.
